'Olympian' Fig

Price: $22.95
SKU: CFD14245
Qty:
For optimum performance we suggest:
15-10-30 Bud-N-Flower Booster for Fruits & Vegetables

This easy-to-grow, self-fertile fig is a game-changer, producing in both cool and coastal climates. An excellent variety for the home gardener! This heirloom variety is loaded with sweet flavor and antioxidants! The 'Olympian' variety produces tangerine-sized fruit with thin purple skin and red to violet flesh, complete with a delightful flavor! Includes one actively growing plant in a one gallon pot.

Discovered by retired biologist, Denny McGaughy, this fig was named for the city in which it was found, Olympia, Washington. Withstanding the test of time, this variety is actually an heirloom that had been growing in a protected site for over 100 years. 'Olympian' was confirmed to be a distinct cultivar via DNA testing when compared with the 270 varieties at the USDA ARS Germplasm Repository in California. Winner of the Retailers' Choice Award at the 2014 Far West Show! Extremely hardy with the first crop ripening on old wood as early as May. This early crop is known to withstand temperatures into the teens. The plant itself is hardy down to zero degrees once well established, freezing back to the ground in cold climates only to return in spring and to bear another crop of fruit. Fig trees perform best in areas that receive direct sun at least eight hours per day. Perfect to plant in edible gardens, as a focal point or in containers on your deck or patio. This self-fertile reliable producer is disease and deer resisitant, can be planted in a variety of soil conditions and is drought tolerant, making it virtually maintenance free.
