Dorsett Golden is a cultivar of domesticated apple that resembles the 'Golden Delicious' variety. However, it is distinct in a few key ways: it matures early in the season and requires fewer hours of cold weather (less than 300 hours) to bloom, making it suitable for warmer climates.
Due to these characteristics—being able to thrive in warm conditions and flowering early—Dorsett Golden is quite similar to the Anna apple cultivar, which was bred in Israel. Both cultivars are compatible and can serve as effective partners for outcross pollination. Like most apple cultivars, both Dorsett Golden and Anna are self-incompatible, meaning they require pollen from a different apple cultivar for fertilization. Therefore, any farmer cultivating one of these two varieties will likely need to plant the other nearby to ensure successful pollination.
